FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANAGEMENT

March 4, 2013

We covered legal matters like business entities and regulations  that businesses are required to follow.  This was general overview and not necessarily specific to Florida.  All the specific information was covered by stating go the internet and search the list of regulatory authority sites to obtain details on what is required. It would have been more beneficial if we would have covered specific requirements for Florida businesses.

We have moved on to Human Resources, mostly covering interviewing of potential candidates for employment, training, and evaluating staff.  Our assignment this week is to write job descriptions for each of the staff for our business plan and write interview questions that we would ask potential candidates.

We continued on with Human Resources, covering disciplining employees and federal laws concerning employment. As the teacher was discussing employees, he mentioned that not all people are right for all positions and asked one of the students how old they were. Two of the students in the area mentioned they were both 18. The next comment the teacher made resulted in complete chaos in the classroom once again. He stated "You need to decide what you are going to do in life when you are about 18 because you cannot change it when you get older." I am sure the teacher is saying about now that he will never make this comment in class again, LOL.

Now I would guess that one-third of the students in this particular class are 35 or older so you can imagine the comments that transpired after that statement was made. Even the students that were 18  commented on how this statement was not true. After things calmed down in the room, the teacher revised his comment by stating that you can change your career but it is hard to do. To this comment, one of the students said I am a 40 year mother of 5 children, worked in IT making $26 an hour for most of life, quit my job because I realized I hated what I did, started school here to change my career, and have taken an apprenticeship job making $9 an hour and yet I don't seem to be having a problem with it.  It made class interesting today.
